WORLD’S LONGEST SCREENPRINT (2015)
On Saturday 12 December, 2015 Megalo staff and members printed the world’s longest screenprint, to celebrate Megalo’s 35th birthday.
This was a really fun project, but for some reason there was hardly any media coverage, and something went awry and the Guinness record people were never invited.
The screen was 35m long, and was built inside the fitters workshop in Kingston. The frame was designed by Dave Segal, and built by Dave and Ben Hinton.
The stencil was made from loads of paper, stuck together to make a continuous strip. It was almost all text, listing the historic milestones throughout Megalo’s 35 years - all hand cut by staff and members of Megalo.
For printing, the stencil was laid out on the floor, the mesh was rolled out over the top, the frame built on top of that, and then the mesh was wrapped and stapled and the stencil secured.
It took 138m of timber for the frame, and was printed in one continuous pull.
Because it was never recorded by Guiness, I think the record currently sits with these guys (World’s Longest Screenprint Youtube), who made a 21m screenprint (which looks amazing)
As I was involved in the printing I only have photos from behind the scenes (below), but there was a good video snippet from the day on Megalo’s Instagram, which you can see here ->
